Nun at St. Joseph's Hospital rebuked over abortion to save woman Retrieved May 18, 2010 from the Arizona Republic http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/news/articles/2010/05/15/20100515phoenix-catholic-nun-abortion.html.
A clear, fair summary--remarkable in itself for the secular press in the U.S.--of the Catholic position against the deliberate and direct taking of one innocent human life even in order to save another. Human beings have inherent dignity and worth at all stages of life, from conception to natural death, and may not be treated as means to an end, even the end of saving another innocent life. We may choose to save one life rather than another, say if two people are drowning and we can only save one (as long as bad ulterior motives are not involved), but not to kill one individual in order to save another.
